Southern Italy
Sicily
Older than Italy itself, richer in history than most people realize.
Sicily is the layer beneath Italy. Greek temples in the southeast. Norman cathedrals in Palermo. Arab-influenced architecture throughout the island. Baroque towns rebuilt in uniform grandeur after a seventeenth-century earthquake. The island has been claimed and remade by so many civilizations that its cultural depth is extraordinary, and largely underestimated.
Sicily's food alone would justify the journey. The markets in Palermo, the pistachios from Bronte, the ricotta from the island's interior, the wines grown on Etna's volcanic slopes. Understanding where food comes from, and what history it carries, is one of the deepest forms of travel. Sicily offers this in abundance.

From the field
“The fish market in Catania at seven in the morning, volume and color and smell.”
“Etna from the road at dusk, smoke, a faint glow, something ancient and present.”
