Florence
The Renaissance at walking scale.
Florence is compact enough to understand. Unlike Rome, where history radiates in every direction without a clear center, Florence has a geographic coherence that makes it possible to develop a real relationship with the city over several days. The Arno, the hills, the domes: the city is legible in a way that Rome never quite is.
The Uffizi is not a place to rush through. Neither is the Accademia, the Bargello, or the less-visited Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. A group that approaches Florence with time and a guide who knows these rooms deeply comes away with something that does not fade, an understanding of a particular moment in human history when a city decided to pursue beauty as a civic project.
Best time to visit
March through May, September through November
Florence in late spring or early autumn is genuinely pleasurable. The summer crowds and heat are notable. The museums reward those who arrive in the quieter months.
Best for
- Art and culture groups
- Renaissance history tours
- Small group journeys
- Academic and educational groups
From the field
“The Duomo from a rooftop at dawn, the city just waking, no crowds yet.”
“Room 15 of the Uffizi at a quiet hour, Botticelli, the light, the scale of it.”
“The Ponte Vecchio at dusk from the Ponte Santa Trinita, both banks in the last light.”
